Preparing to Leave

If you are leaving an abusive relationship:

Plan where to go before leaving your home.

Pack a suitcase for yourself and your children.  Store it in a safe place in your home where it can be retrieved in a hurry or leave it with a trusted friend/family member.

Keep your keys in a safe, secure location so you and your children can leave quickly if need be.

Internet Safety

~  If you are worried that your activities are
being monitored, please use a safer computer, such as
one in a public library or at a trusted friend's house.

~  It is impossible to erase all your activity from a
computer's history, and if your abuser shares the
same computer it may be suspicious to start clearing
your browser history if this is not your normal
behavior.  Some browsers may have an option
for "private browsing," but be aware that there can
be other ways to track internet and computer usage.

~  Sudden changes in internet and computer behavior
can raise suspicion.  If you start to use a safe
computer, continue to use your usual computer for
neutral tasks, such as checking sports, local news or
the weather, so as to minimize suspicion.

Did You Know?!

1 out of every 6 American women have been the victims of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.

While about 80% of all victims are white, minorities are somewhat more likely to be attacked.

1 in 33 American men have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.

15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 12.

93% of juvenile sexual assault victims know their attacker.

Power and Control

It is not your fault if you are being abused.  Many people have difficulty understanding the power and control used by abusers to manipulate their victims.  The power and control wheel, pictured above, was developed by the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project in Duluth, MN.  It reviews many of the ways in which abusers will use threats, isolation and manipulation to control the people they "love."  By clicking the wheel above, you can view a larger image of the wheel hosted on The Duluth Model's website.  (Poder y Control en español)

For more information on the research leading to the wheel method, or for additional wheels, visit TheDuluthModel.org
